Poem In Your Pocket Day this year was April 26. It was initiated in April 2002 by the Office of the Mayor in New York City. In 2008 it was initiated to all 50 states and was extended to Canada in 2016.

People celebrate this day by carrying a poem and share it with friends in school or workspace. It is in honor of the National Poetry Month, April. The National Poetry Month was introduced in 1996, as a way to increase awareness and appreciation for poetry in America. It was inspired by Black History Month in February and  March, the Women’s History month.

Each year publishers, booksellers, educators and literary organizations use April to spread the influence of  poetry by releasing and publicizing their poetry titles in April. Teachers often teach poetry during this month and bookstores and reading series frequently hold special readings. Also, Poem In Your Pocket Day is a very important event in this month as many libraries and literary organizations host reading sessions for poetry on that day. Many teachers spread it in school and students will continue to participate in this tradition.
